Red Tailed Hawk

The Red Tailed Hawk, Buteo Jamaicensis, is a four pound 24 inch bird with a wingspan of up to 54 inches and eyesight many times sharper than a human. It has a lifespan of ten to twenty years and is found in most areas of the United States, even nesting on the top some of the tallest buildings in our largest cities.

All facts and figures are quickly forgotten when you are presented with the sight of a low flying hunter in the morning light with a russet red tail glowing pinkish red on the underside, patrolling the terrain for his breakfast of a small mammal or frog. The morning stillness is shattered by his shrill and high pitched cry, the most distinctive in the world of raptors.
